Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal filler injections can help to create definition in features such as the lips, cheeks, jaw, around the mouth and other areas. They can also improve hydration within the skin. Adding volume to subtly shape the face, filler can restore volume loss caused by ageing and restore a more youthful and vibrant appearance.

The most commonly used Dermal Filler contains ‘Hyaluronic Acid’, a natural compound that aides with the production of collagen and elastin. This substance helps strengthens connective tissue and helps store water within the skin’s tissue. Hyaluronic Acid is found in our skin and tissue which adds plumpness. This is injected beneath the surface of the skin to a specific area.

Jawline contouring

Jawline contouring uses dermal filler to help define the jawline. This is a simple, safe and effective treatment for anti-ageing and restoring facial balance and harmony. With age, we often see a loss of definition along the jawline, leading to the formation of jowls. Lip dissolve  – (prescription required)

Lip fillers typically break down over time due to naturally occurring hyaluronidase. When filler dissolving is required, concentrated doses of hyaluronidase are injected into the lips. The injections break down the hyaluronic acid in the lip filler. This is then disposed of by the body’s natural systems.

Lips – 1ml

Cheeks – 1.5ml per cheek

Jawline – 1.5ml per side

Nose – 1ml

Are dermal fillers painful?

A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area prior to commencing treatment to create a more comfortable treatment experience. The treatment process does involve needles and treatment comfort varies depending on the area being treated.

Will I bruise?

There is a risk of swelling and bruising with any cosmetic procedure. There is no definite answer for how long the bruising and swelling will last for each individual after procedures. If you have a special event in mind, we recommend to have your procedures done at least 2 weeks prior to allow any bruising to subside.

When will I see the effects of my fillers?

You will see the results of any fillers instantaneously, however due to swelling and allowing time for the fillers to soften slightly we recommend a full 2 weeks before you see the full effect.

How long is the procedure?

Lips – 30-45min

Jawline – 45 – 60min

Cheeks – 45-60min

Nose – 30-45min

How long will my fillers last?

As Dermal Fillers are made from a compound found in your body, they will slowly absorb over time. Fillers can last between 6-12 months and do not last as long for people with a higher metabolism, that work out frequently or who are exposed to excessive UV light.

It is recommended to top up every 9-12 months to maintain your desired look.

Are there any side effects?

Occasionally there are some side effects which include redness, bruising, swelling, and bleeding at the injection site.

Dermal Fillers are safe products; however, we recommend to avoid fillers if you are subject or have experienced the following:

  • Allergy to Hyaluronic Acid.
  • Allergy to Lidocaine or Adrenaline.
  • Patients with bleeding and blood disorders/leukaemia/lymphoma. (You need clearance from your haematologist before proceeding, as the risk of infection is higher).
  • Patient on chemotherapy or immunosuppressant. (You need clearance from your haematologist/oncologist before proceeding, as the risk of infection is higher)
  • Sensitivity to gram-positive bacteria proteins.
  • Active infection or inflammation in the skin area to be injected.
  • Patient with on-going other facial treatments as chemical peels, laser treatment or microdermabrasion.
  • Patients at risk of Keloids (hypertrophic scarring).
  • Patient with active cold sores.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women ( best to avoid, with no supporting evidence).
  • Patients planning to have facial surgery in the next 12 months.
  • Patient on blood thinning agents (for example Aspirin, Clopidogrel, NSAIDS, Warfarin and Apixaban) can have dermal fillers. However, the risk of bruising is higher.

We recommend to book a consultation to discuss any concerns and if you suffer from any of the above.

What will I need to do after having fillers?

The post procedure experience is always different for everyone. There may be bruising and swelling, some more than others. It is important to use self care after having a procedure. You will receive information about the aftercare, and tips to manage pain, clean the area and treat the area. It is important to keep the area of skin clean – avoid heavy creams and makeup, avoid heat and high temperatures which can irritate the skin and cause inflammation, avoid touching or rubbing the skin to reduce irritation and swelling. If you experience unusual symptoms, please contact us or a medical professional.

For pain it is best to take paracetamol. Avoid medications that will affect your blood – for example ibuprofen. If you take any medications, please advise us before the procedure. Lumps and bumps can be natural and will soften over time. It is possible to massage visible lumps only, you do not want to upset and displace your filler. Numbness and tingling can occur and will subside after a few days.

Some more specific instructions to follow include:

  • Avoid exercise for 24–48 hours.
  • Avoid direct UV exposure; sunbeds and steam rooms/ saunas.
  • Use a soothing, antiseptic cream such as Bepanthen to treat the area.
  • Sleep on your back for the first few nights to relieve pressure on the area and avoid disturbing the filler.
  • Do not consume alcohol in the first 24 hours to avoid thinning the blood.
  • Do not use AHAs, BHAs, Retinol, or Vitamin C for 24 hours after the procedure.
  • Avoid laser treatments, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels for 2 weeks following the procedure.
